Hanging monitors
Hey all,
One thing ive been seeing alot is people having their monitors suspended above them, or built into the wall at an angle. Just curious to see is their any advantages of having them suspended infront of you. Rather on stands pointed at you. Thanks - Idgeit

I would think there are advantages to hanging in terms of decoupling the cabinets from other (resonating) surfaces.
One draw back is boring a hole in the cab for hangers or rigging some kind of sling. Also, it's more difficult to move them if you rearrange the room (same goes for wall-cavity placement, too, but there the room layout is probably well-defined in advance). I used to hang my home speakers from the ceiling with several strands of fishing line. Worked well and looked kind of cool... ![]() |

Most hung or mounted speakers are not the primary listening source.

Depends on the type of monitors. If you are using near-field monitors, their optimal position should be where the two monitors and your head form an equilateral triangle with the monitors facing in towards you head. For such monitor types, wall mounting should only be done if it is the best or only way to get such a positioning.
As far as the huge in-wall monitors that you often see in the pro control rooms go, most pro engineers I talk to these days (not that I talk to a whole lot of them, mind you) say they have them there either because they were alreay there when they bought the studio used or because the sight of them impresses clients. But they rarely actually use them for the bread-and-butter mixing. G. |
