Question ALESIS HD24 Question...

Ok first off, please dont shoot me for double posting. I dont make a habit of it. I already posted this question in the NEWBIE section, then the bulb went off that I should have posted it here. Sorry wont happen again!!

Anyway here was the question/post:

I currently have several Alesis ADAT tape machines I am using in my studio. Now I just ordered an ALESIS HD 24 HD Recorder.

Can I sync them all together (as the tape machines are now) and run OUT of the BRC (master Alesis remote controller) ,then into the HD24, then out of the HD24 and into all the Tape machines??

My goal is to try to be able to tape onto the HD24 at the same time as taping onto the Alesis Adat Tape Machines so I will have the recordings on both at the same time.

Can this be done?? and if so, may I ask how?

Thanks again
AJ

Yup. Just trwat the HD24 as the master in the chain and slave all the adats just as if the HD24 was also an ADAT. Your BRC should recognize the HD24 as three ADAT's if I remember right.

Actually I suggest putting the tape-based units IN FRONT of the HD24... the sync'ing is much easier. (And yes, I know this from experience!)

The HD24 has instant access, instant play... the tape-based units do not, so if you put the HD24 first, you could Locate and play before the first ADAT even has a chance to respond to the Locate! The other way around, sure, you have to wait for the ADATs to lock (2-3 secs), but at least everything will sync properly since the HD24 will follow the ADAT lock times (it just locks-in faster!)

Thats a good point Bruce. I haven't synced ADAT's to an HD24 and a BRC before ( I was just repeating Alesis's reccomendation and I avoid ADAT's wherever possible). What you are saying certainly seems to make sense.

On the other hand, if you do that, won't you be limited to the transport features of your master ADAT in the chain? i.e. locate points, scrub options etc....

Not really - some of the features (like FF/REW) don't work the same in both units anyways, so there are certain compatibility issues you simply have to live with when using that kind of integrated setup.

Initially, I used the combined ADAT/HD24 rig too, but the small incompatibilities started to become annoyances to me and I just took the ADATs out of the chain and relegated them to spare/bkp/remote use. Nowadays, I just have one around for backward compatibility and the odd transfer. The other 3 are on the selling block!

Got room on that selling block for my ADATs and my BRC?

How much for the BRC? Would it give me any major benefits over the LRC for using with the HD24?

Someone else will have to answer concerning the BRC to HD24 usefulness since I have not used it with one before. I am asking $325 shipped for my BRC.
