Question

I bought a 424mkIII about a week ago. I am now able to record with the first 4 channels, bounce tracks, and mix down. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use the 5th or 6th channel. I've read through the manual to no avail. I'm very new to all of this and would be very greatful if someone could help me out. Thanks.

Cool

Hi, Rawk;
In answer to your question, the 5th & 6th channels are not for recording, but rather to use as outputs from your deck to your mastering device (cassette deck, 'puter, etc.). You can use one of them to do a simple master tape, or use both by outputting your tracks through one and use the other as an effect return (reverb, tremolo, delay, etc.) to enhance track(s). I hope this has been of help to you.

Plus, with the 2 extra channels, you can record 6 inputs simultaneously.

The problem is that on those inputs, you can not assign them to their own tracks. I have never used them. I just record 3 at a time and go back and bounce tracks. I find them kind of useless.
But then, I've been told I am kind of useless...so who am I to judge?

extra channels

the 424mkIII is a four track recorder with an 8 channel mixer, 6 of which have full trim, eq , effects send/tape cue, and pann controls. Channels 7 and 8 are rudimentary returns (for the effects or for certain line in sources like CD players or keyboards etc where the sound quality is all taken care of beforehand)

Channels 5 and 6 however, lets us EQ these inputs. Eg. an effects return, can be EQ, and panned to our liking. Or six channel inputs and be EQ'd and panned down to 2 stero tracks using the Buss L/R recording feature.

I use 5-6 as stereo inputs for my drum machine, 7-8 as stereo inputs for my keyboard. They ARE for recording, and they're very handy, because you can keep whatever devices you want plugged into these while using the first four inputs for swapping mics around, etc. You can assign them to two tracks for stereo, or just one (mono) track if you need the other tracks for vocals, guitar, etc. Or you can use them as effects returns (as stated above).

I'd disagree that they should be used as outputs to a mastering deck? They're inputs! Use the "line outs" to go to your mastering deck.
