It's something really interesting, and it makes me sad that I hadn't heard of it till now either. Has the technique been used in any record? If not, I can't believe people haven't explored the field of holophony.

The article made it sound like a few people were interested in it (Peter Gabriel for one), but don't recall ever hearing that it had been done. Like I said, it was one of those things I'd never heard of until now. It seems to me that you'd need to have something like a 5.1 speaker system to be able to fully appreciate it anyhow, and those were not commercially available in the 80's...

i read that sony recently patented a form of this technology, and are researching it and marketing it as a "real life matrix" like the movie.
not just sound, but video, taste, etc.

If they re-record all the sound effects in holophonic sound, we will have to buy the trilogy again...

I listened to the samples, and I really didn't think that much of it. I really think that many of the techniques used in making these recordings is already being used everyday. The reason then need surround sound nowadays, is because this Holophonic thing cannot be replicated without headphones. I bet I could find some album examples where there is stuff that is holophonic on them without it being called holophonic.

I would like a tv though that was holographic. Now that would be somthing. And brain implants so I don't need speakers to hear sound...
