Hi.

To help with a dissertation I am currently working on I would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes and list what you think are the most important inventions, artists, producers and composers of the last 100 years in relation to music. Anything from George Martin to the popularisation of digital recording techniques would be very appreciated.

Last 100 years? You'd have to start with Igor Stravinsky, after that the serialists like Schoenberg, and finally modernists like Cage.

Inventions, hmmm, vacuum tube is a little older, but I think the first practical tube amp was less than 100 years ago. After that, you've got the transistor, magnetic tape; theremin, which I think was the first synthesis--could be wrong there. Obviously the electric guitar was important.

I think that technological innovation drives musical innovation. For instance:

The invention of the electric guitar allowed an individual musician to have the same volume as an entire orchestra. This made smaller ensembles possible, reducing the need for musicians to play in rhythmic tandem, and eventually resulting in the rawness of rock and roll.

Similarly, the invention of the sampler, as well as the discovery of the turntable's potential as a musical instrument, allowed hip hop and electronic dance music to develop.

Future historians, I believe, will see the proliferation of affordable digital recording equipment as another major technological/musical innovation. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out, though

Any inexpensive recording equipment. Gets people doing something that was not heard of at home just a few years ago. May not make good quality recordings, but the motion has to start somewhere.

The first person that comes to mind as far as an invention that pertains to studio recording has to be Les Paul, who invented multi-track recording. Another group of individuals and composers that forever changed the way popular music was heard is the Beatles, along with George Martin of course. When the Beatles made some of their first recordings, they didn't have much of a chance to use multi-track or sound on sound recording, but that of course changed in their later recordings.
