Too much noise!

My guitarist does a lot of finger picking and plays very softly, so my preamps gain is way up...so i'm getting tons of noise on these recordings. my signal chain is Bluebird mic --> presonus eureka --> mbox.

is it my signal chain or do you guys think that the noise is coming from my acoustically deficient bedroom? also waves x-noise does a good job on getting the noise out but really dulls the quality of the guitar. any suggestions?

How are you positioning the mic??? If he's playing that softly you should be able to get pretty close-in.

You might also try a gate. I think compression will just raise the noise along with the signal.

Generally cascading gain stages is a bad idea, but have you tried putting half the gain on with the presonus and half the gain on with the Mbox?
