688 Midistudio problem

Folks, I'm new to the board. I bought a 688 Midistudio after having a Yamaha MT-8X, as I really need to be able to record all 8 tracks at once. This particular unit stops for no reason. There isn't any repeatable time span between pushing play (or rewind) and when it will stop. When it does, the counter resets to 0. I'm looking for ideas or the name of an experienced repairman who can fix it up.
