Post MIDI classes available?

I wish they had MIDI schools here and there you could get courses in locally. The dealers don't want to give you the time of day. There must be "MIDI for dummies" publications out there but where do you find them?

I've upgraded to M-Audio's Keystation Pro 88 from a T-1 Korg. It has more controls that I know what to do with. I needed an external standalone sequencer so I got a Yamaha QY100. I really needed some decent voices so I got a Roland XV 2020.

Here's the problem I'm having; Though the sounds on the QY are decent, I still like the XV 2020's better. I hoped to be able to use the sequencer for the Roland voices including all of the editing (job) features IE.quantize etc.etc.

I've not had any success making this happen though I've tried every combination of MIDI cable hookups there is. Or do I have to go into the Roland XV 2020 and discover some little secret switch to cause the Roland and the Yamaha to jive together? Both units are XG and GM compatible.

Thanks in advance to any body's help and recommendations.

tedluk is on a distinguished road
I can't answer your specific question regarding the XV2020 and the QY100 as I don't use either unit.

In general, Roland has confusing MIDI implementation and their documentation is uniformly terrible. Yamaha is somewhat better, but not much.

There shouldn't be much confusion about how to connect the units. OUTS go to INS, INS go to OUTS. MIDI THRU connectors simply pass whatever appears at the unit's MIDI IN.

HERE is a link to a site that has links to a lot of basic information regarding MIDI.

I can tell you, it is definitely possible to use the sounds in the XV2020 when playing back sequences from the QY100.

actually, you're in Deerfield? I don't think that's too far from the Orlando area, but you might look here:

I used to know some guys that worked there and I know they do tours and will even give you some lessons i think. Might be worth looking into.
