Losing volume on output

Hey I'm new to this site and forum and have a question which hopefully someone can answer. I have Cubase SL 2.2 and I've set up my audio interface and midi interface correctly (I believe). My problem is when I'm monitoring an audio signal to record, the volume is nice and loud and not distorted. But when I play back what I've recorded the volume drops at least by half. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Even boosting the level does not make it sound like it does when I'm monitoring the sound. Can anybody help with this?

I believe my PC is a P4 with 2.8 GHZ, 512 MB, and 160GB.

What type of soundcard/intrface are you using?

A signal that's being recorded usually goes through a different path than one that's being played back. So to listen to what you've recorded you adjust the volume differently.

I'm using the M14 audio interface that came with the Cubase System 4 bundle and a 2 x 2 MAudio midi interface.

I'm running my MPC 2000, ASR-10, and SP 1200, sound modules, etc. through a Tascam M1516 16/32 channel mixing board. All the equipment are connected to individual channels and the Alt 3/4 direct inputs of the mixing board. Then I run the direct inputs to my audio interface line inputs. The output is connected from the audio interface to two other channels on the mixing board. I can boost the monitored sound from the inputs and the output volume just fine, but the recorded audio track has a very low volume.
