Question How To Translate A Mix

Hey Im Chris, I used to be a member of the forum before I forgot my password and changed my email... Anyways to the point...

My main question is how can I get my mixes to translate from the way they sound on my studio monitors, Alesis M1 Actives, to any other stereo system?
I have my room pretty well tuned acoustically and my set up seems that it should work, but every time I burn a mix that sounds great on my monitors to cd, it seems harsh on the high end of the spectrum. Should I be listening for something that I am not while mixing or mastering? Any pointers will help...

Thanks...

If your well tuned room consists of a bunch of foam, you could be sucking all the high end out of the room and hence are boosting highs so it doesn't sound dull. This would result in your mix being harsh in the high end else where.

Try playing some CD's you're familiar with through your monitoring system. Notice how they sound in relation to your mixes. You basically need to really learn how your system/room sounds.

Awesome, thanks for the info guys. I took down some of the studio foam and that helped tremendously. I also listened to a whole lot of professional cd's and learned what I should be listening for. Thanks for all the help guys.

Yeah, I find if I haven't mixed for awhile that I lose perspective on how my rig sounds. If I spend some time re-acquainting myself with it before I start by playing CDs and doing some critical listening, I can save myself some frustration later on.
