Startrek console design.....

HOLY MOLY...well the future is finally here. Time to rethink front of room design now. Beam me up Scotty!

Hello Darryl, how are you. Well, I doubt if its in ANY homerecording enthusiasts league. Cool concept, although, I'm still stuck in analog land. But thats what I like, so oh well. What I meant by front of room design is my console. I can take the angled front laminate panel off which leaves a steel "bridge" with deck panel. Then I'll fit panels of 703 to the front angle, and cover them with fabric. That way, when I soffet my speakers, there will be no reflections off the front angle. Right now it has a laminate panel, which would reflect back towards the front wall upwards. Since my front wall will be mostly reflective(baffle extensions, I don't want those reflections back towards the speakers and baffles.

Comprende.

Of course, you realize, that another modification that requires more work means it'll be longer until you get things up and running. Isn't the idea of a home studio supposed to be that we can actually record at home?

Seems like too many of us spend all our time planning/designing/building our studios that we never get the chance to actually record anything. I'm about to get myself into this mode again as well. After doing a ton of mixing the last few months I've come to the conlcusion that my closet studio needs some serious rework for the acoustics (I get closer to translatable mixes with my headphones than I do with my monitors ). I did some brainstorming with some thoughts that Steve and John were presenting to someone else over at John's site and have come up with my next attempt to create a usable mixing room in an 8 ft cube. All I need now is money to buy some 703 or rockwool panels (and to somehow sneak it past my wife, into the basement, and get it installed without her knowledge since she's put a moratorium on studio spending until my daughter graduates from college [note that she doesn't actually start college until this fall so it is going to be a loooooooonnnnnnnggg time coming.....]). But, that's just the way it goes, I guess.

Now if I can just find those dilithium crystals..........

Darryl.....

Oh, too fancy for me.

I still have a design sitting here for a "console controller", which is nothing more than a huge pile of TTL chips that scan a huge plethora of digital encoders, putting those values 0-255 into a memory window of a personal computer.

All you have to do is read the memory value in the address, and you know the position of each encoder. And the design limits the number of knobs and faders and pushbuttons to 16384.

So figure 16 encoders and 16 pushbuttons per channel, thats 32 total controllers, 16384/32 = 1024 input and tape return channels.

Probably more than enough :-D

I buitl one channel and was able to scan it no problem, almost instantly, using DOS and Q-basic. channel=0;For x=0 to 31; encoder[channel,x]=peek(offset+channel*16+x);

etc.

Just never built it, because I had no idea what to do with that data from a mixing perspective. A programmer I am not.

SmartConsole.... bah.

You'll need some sort of cyborg implant option just to communicate with it. Walk around looking like 7 of 9 (hmmm).

Michael,

Where you been hiding lately? It's been kinda lonely around here without you (well, Fitz and Frederic are decent company but I've missed seeing your avatar of late).

How's the studio coming along?

There's a lot of drywall left to be done.
I still need floors, and the electric has to be finalized.
We've had a lot of stuff going on with our business lately,(good stuff) so that's kind of kept me out of there, at least on a regular basis.

Hello Michael, thought you might have become bored with the bbs. Glad to see ya here. I know what you mean though. Day to day work, honey-do's and life in general have kept me tapped for over a year now. What little time I have left is usually "wiped out" time . I made a trip to Sacramento and visited my best friend a few weeks ago. Got to play guitar for a day and a half. Almost forgot which end is the pickin end But it sparked my interest in music again, so now I've been practicing a little each night. Man, talk about rusty. These ole fingers get stiffer by the day. Especially after working in a cold shop all day. Weather has been great this year though. Only 2 big storms the whole winter, which is REALLY unusual for this area. Well, keep in touch and hope you have some time for your studio soon.
Cheers

What a bunch of whiners.

I'm here drowning in diapers and no time to do truck stuff or studio stuff

I ran a long snake across the floor front to back just to "get buy" until I have enough time to do the whole snake job under the floor.

*sigh*

Thank god for whoever invented the diaper genie.

He he he, we used that for #1 and #2. #3 we tied up in grocery bags. We're on #4 now, we don't even bother to tie up the wet ones.

Until then its waaaa waaaa waaaa LOL

Don't mind me, I'm just frustrated with not having my former 8-9 hours of sleep.

Excuse my manners frederic. Congratulations on the newest member of your family. I didn't know your wife had delivered. Well, get use to fewer hours of sleep. Man do I remember those days. But its worth it. Nothing makes life as fullfilling as having kids. If there were only one reason why we exist, thats gotta be it. Anyways, heres to ya daddy!!

Ditto. I started this journey through the joys and trials of parenthood 17 years, 316 days ago and I wouldn't trade it for anything (well, most days anyway ).

Congrats!!
