Stupid cabling question

My instruments & synths have 1/4' mono outputs, of course, and my mixer only has balanced TRS inputs. How do I hook them up? Are there special 1/4' unbalanced -> TRS balanced cables?

A typical mixer input will accept either balanced or unbalanced cables. What happens if you plug in an unbalanced cable? At worst I would expect you may have to increase your gain by 6 dB.
