XM8500 for guitar?

hey!
i heard that to record from a cab you can take a behringer xm8500 mic (a5$ buy), get the grill out and put it off-axis on the speaker and it will sound just as any 300$ mic. Heard it from a professional.

any thoughts about it?
thnx!

Is that the one that's a copy of an SM-58? I've used some other 58 clones and they weren't too bad. (some that stunk) You still can't really call it a 58, but there's less differences between dynamic mics as opposed to condensers. I found a company called GLS audio that makes 58 & 57 clones that when a/b'd sound exactly alike except the GLS are a little hotter because of neodymium magnets. They're $30 each, too. The 58's also come with a switch. Very handy. The retailer claims the capsules are exact copies. (yeah, sure.)

I've always wanted to try an ECM8000. (reference mic) The fact that it's omnidirectional might solve the problem of which part of the cone to point the mic at. You'd have to make sure the amp was at a medium level because it can't handle high SPLs, and too quite the thing has too much noise. I like that it's ruler flat and really doesn't color the sound. I'm going to try it and see how it sounds.

I have the XM8500 and the SM57. I have to tell you that the mid range bump on the XM8500 is not as pleasing as the SM57. It's a lot darker, and I believe, duller. I like to put the XM8500 on toms, for live vocals it's "ok" but I would trust them for road trips.

Hmm, I've got an ecm8000 lying around here. Ripped the capsule out though, so I gotta do SOMETHING to it, even if that's just giving up on modding it and putting it back together. Might as well just mod it, but I've yet to get around to anything like that.

I enjoy my CAD m179 on guitar cab, but haven't had a chance to really use it in a mix... only ones I've done since getting a pair, the right sound was the 57. Maybe next time I'll do the guitar fist and build the rest around there. =D

They have it downloadable. Doesn't have the poor quality of the purevolume streaming crap when you download it.

XM8500 v. SM57

(1) Yes, it works like a 57 with the ball off. Not exactly like a 57 in the mix but definitely more than OK for live reinforecment.

(2) If you can afford the 57, get the 57. If you can't, the 8500 is a good, inexpensive alternative. I have more than a few 8500 mics as spares for unknown "I used to be a singer" types that we let sit in, sitting in the bottom of some of my generally unused guitar combos and practice combo. It's also inexpensive enough to use as a blunt tomahawk for those times when you need to "project" attention at someone reaching for your drink (or those remoras that circle your lady when you hit the stage). Not necessarily in that order.

(3) If you can afford the 57, try the Sennheiser e609s.

(4) If you like the 57, or don't like defending your own opinion, get the 57 and be happy!

This probably didn't help much, did it?

Paj
