Buzziz galore

Why does it sound like a Ray gun mixed with a tumble dryer whenever i plug my bass or guitar in to record?????
i'm going directly from the output of the guitar into a Joe Meek vc1q into a patchbay into an EMI interface into my computer.
When i move around at different angles, it gets a little better.

Can you plug directly into the EMU from the Joemeek with a balanced cable? If so, try it and see if the problem goes away.

What kind of monitor do you have? If it's a CRT, then you could be getting interference from that. Try moving away from the screen.

Nope, the emi interface has RCA inputs, i dont think they make balanced xlr or 1/4" to balanced RCA cables

I do have a CRT monitor, its the last studio display monitor mac made...ya know the one with the clear back???
How far do i have to move away?
If i turn away some of the noise leaves but even if i stand 15' away with my back to the screen there is still noise????????????????????

Thanks a lot guys for your help.
I also noticed it's much worse with single coil pick ups (my fender bass and fender strat) Not so bad on my les paul.
Any fixes you guys can think of ???

Bad cables? Long cable runs? Cell phone, RF device? Grounding issues?

Any flurescent lights, or transformers for halogen low voltage, or dimmers in the room?

Really?

I've never had one buzz. Though I hate them because they cover an unused outlet, and often overheat and cook.

The latter can be fixed with a drill press

I've recently picked up a piece of gear with a buzzing wall wart. Any fix to this?

Yes, replace it with a proper, regulated power supply

It came from Frontier Design for the Tango 24 and has a separate power module between the two connnections (receptacle plug and interface to the unit). Moving it away from the rack and mounting it on an adjacent wall seemed to fix it.

Sounds like grounding problems to me. Does it get any better if you turn off all the lights? Does the buzz come and go (like whenever th microwave or refrigerator or coffe pot runs...)? You may need to try some AC ground lift adapters in certain places. This is not the proper way of fixing it, but it may work and is FAR less expensive than isolated balanced power.
