Gain on my sm57

i have two sm57's which i use for vocals and distorted amp micing....on my preamp what should i set my gain to.

Elmo89m - turn it up until you get a good signal to whatever you're recording to. There is no one-size-fits-all position. What kind of pre are you using, anyway? What are you recording onto? This kind of detail always helps when asking this kind of question.

If you are recording to 24bit, having a signal that's grazing the 0db "clip" line probably isn't necessary. I usually set my gain by playing the loudest note I plan on recording and tweaking the gain so that it's peaking at about -6db on the meter.
