outlandish ebay claim!!??

for Item 7302858605, a 424 mk ii, seller says:

"Remember this is the model recorder the Beatles recorded Sgt. Peppers lonely hearts club band on."

Is there anything even remotely true about this? I know they recorded on 4-track, but that seems to be it.

That's not true at all!

It was Beethoven that did his 5th symphony on it!

Never mind that there wasn't electricity at the time...he used batteries...AA's, yeah, that's the ticket.

Cheers!

I just sent the following email to the vendor:

What a load of rubbish. Sgt. Peppers WAS NOT recorded on a 4-track cassette machine. This model TASCAM was even invented yet. I suggest you edit your description or eBay will hear about this.

"What, calm down, ebay wouldn't care if you told them. Sorry Im not perfect, but thats what other sellers have said. Why do you even care."

What a dumbass!

the 4 tracks in those days used very wide tape. I think it might have been even 2" ? not sure, will check, but it was a serious machine not a pos cassette. - wait I have to look this up.....10 minutes later....it was 1 inch tape - page 148 "All You Need is Ears" by George Martin.

We know the difference between 4 on 1" and 4 on 1/4" and then there's the machine....

I believe he is referencing a different point about Sgt Peppers

Agreed that this guy has it way wrong. Yes the Portastudio wasn't invented nor was TASCAM(1974)for that matter. The claim goes that "the Beatles recorded Sgt Peppers on a 4 track that didn't speck out as well as a 424, mkII, mkIII." This claim may or may not be true because I have no idea what machine was used nor how it specked out. But I have heard this claim made at Tascam before. Given advances in Noise Reduction systems and tape formulation since Sgt Peppers was released, it's not that unbelievable that a 424 could indeed spec out better. It is a subjective arguement regardless. One thing is for sure, neither George Martin nor the genius of Lennon/McCartney comes included with the Portastudio. Hit song not included.

Either way, the guy seriously twisted the "Beatles" claim.

That has got to be the most overt twisting of a half truth ever!
Yes it was recorded on a 4 track.
Tascam 424mkII tho?!

Anyways, thats a good discussion point. How does the best in recording technology of 1967 compare to the budget priced technology today. As far as recording quality goes? (as prev post said: Obviously without Geoff Emerick engineering and George Martin behind the console!).

For that matter apart from recording format, what about pre-amps/effects or even mics??
Gawd damn, ive hit on somthing about the Fabs I didnt know. What mics did they use from '62-'69? Anybody know??

Looks like some Neumanns, some AKGs, I've heard Lennon used a SM-57 for the odd vocal. All run through Fairchild compressors. A lot of this information is fairly well documented in various books, interviews (mainly with Emerick) and lots of session photos.

Cheers,
Trillian

They used BTR (British Tape Recorders) 4 track machines with 1" tape up until 1968 when Abby Road installed a 3M eight track machine. The Beatles first eight track recording experiences were at Trident studios.

Spec out better, maybe. Sound better? No way. I'd bet my Mackie 1604 specs out better than my API pres, but I know which one I use to record drums with.

Just when you thought the story was over.

I just got the following email:

Look asshole, my 13 year old brother put this ad up and problably made a mistake. He's not out to rip anybody off. Now knock that shit off you punk.

And here was my reply:

Nice mouth. Are you always so immature, or just in emails?

Look, misrepresenting an item just because "everyone else does it" is no excuse.

Now go cry to someone who cares.

The "look asshole" part just pushed my Scottish blood into a feuding boil. Could you please send me his email in a private message so I can report him to the Federal Internet Fraud Hotline?

He's a ripe candidate, if there ever was one, to learn that you can't just do what ever the hell you want on ebay.

Thanks,
Tim
