Room treatment

The idea of room treatment is what exactly? I kind of get the idea but is it mainly for allowing your monitors to playback without any unwatned room reverberations/frequencies?

I record and monitor/mix in the same room. At the moment its untreated and i assume hanging carpet everywhere wont benifit me much. I have a mic about 1 ft away from a plain wall. On the wall is a wooden shelf about eye - level so the mic sits underneath in a kind of 'cubby' with no sides. Would anyone recommend I place some sort of acoustic tile against the wall so im singing right at it?Or on the underside of the shelf to make a kind of open 'booth'? How will this benifit a vocal performace?

Yes, in actual fact im a complete noooooobie at this stuff. (betcha couldnt guess). I've just been reading around this forum and treatment of rooms seems to come in higher regard than buying a new signal chain for getting quality results for some and is my room is completley untreated.....!??

Ben,

For the complete story see the Acoustics FAQ, second in the list on my Articles page:

It's a lot to read, but when you're done you'll know a lot more about it.
