chad smith bloodsugarsexmagik

hey guys
i was listening earlier to blood sugar sex magik by the one and only red hot chili peppers. and the drum sound blew me away. i know part of this is down to chad smith being one hell of a hitter, but i was just wondering if anyone knew how his kit was mic'd and what kit he used etc?
thanks

Rumor has it they used an SM57 on the kick...no sh*t! Of course, this might need to be verified since I just heard it through the grape vine.

Nik D is on a distinguished road
I heard that too, and I've tried it out and gotten a very similar kick sound.

You may want to check out a video they made during the recording of that album. I think the title is "Funky Monks". It's been an awful long time since I have seen it, but I do remember a lot of footage of their recording process. You might be able to glean some info by watching that video.

I read an article quite a while back by I think Chads drum tech or something about how they got the snare sound on "give it away". He said they miced the snare with a 57 I believe and ran it through a PA. They mic'd the PA to get the final sound.
