A new way to mic drums
i'm on a buzz from smokin' that herb last night, and I came up with a good idea while listening to Len (the band that did "Steal My Sunshine", and it's a great album"), and i thought of something. If someone could put a mic in each stick, and design it so that it wouldn't clip, maybe a lot of insulation, and also put a mic in the bass drum kicker thingy, wouldn't that be a lot easier and clearer than open mics on the kit. I haven't figured out how to mic the hi-hat yet though. I'm not a drummer, but I like to think i have a hint enough to respect them and realize the struggle involved in micing a kit. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Would you have a wireless transmitter in the sticks also? I think it would just sound like a lotta noise with the mics moving around like that. Theirs alot of wind and drummers dont hit the same place every time. It would realy throw off the balance of the stick which would just really mess up the drummer. It might work with These
Where did you get this dope you say of?!?!?! Maybe rig the drummers head with a 5 point/mic surround sound system. That would be intresting ![]() |

sure it has it's kinks, but those will get worked out before a rough design even. about it being off balance, couldn't somebody engineer a lightweight mic that doesn't sound like shit. the mic would pick up sounds all around it, and the end of the stick would have sound vents. surely there must be a way to put this to good use.

Talk about proximity effect. You don't get much closer to the source as you do when hitting it WITH the mic. Better use omnis

Dude, the sound your want to record mainly is not the stick hitting the plastic head, it's the durm resonating...if all you wanted was the drum stick hitting the plastic head, then you could buy some plastic, nail it to a board and call it a drum.......no.....
Then you also have to think about response time, by the time you hit the snare drum, and move your drum stick to your next drum hit, you've already missed that sound you were trying to capture cause you're moving very fast. Your drum attack is different than the sound of the drum shell resonating...you want a good balance of the two... I smoke a lot of weed, but damn!!! ![]() |

Why don't you use a couple tiny pole mics in place of your drumsticks and tell us how it sounds. I bet it's just like herb and Len,
... crappy. |

Nothing to do with micing drums or sticks but one time a buddy and me were just jamming. He is a bass player and I a guitar player. Well, anyway, he went on to tell me that he quit doing acid because he had a bad trip. I've never tried the stuff so I asked what was a bad trip and he said that while playing he hallucinated that his bass melted in his lap. That was enough for me. I couldn't imagine my rick melting in my lap. Drugs Bad. Very very bad. Well, most of them......

Drummers like to drum with drumsticks, not mics. The balance would be screwed up. Also, seven bucks is enough for a pair of drumsticks, but not enough to cover a matched pair of quality SDCs. Wind noise, phase issues, proximity effect, cost, weight.......
Seriously, there are so many reasons this wouldn't work it's wacky. But if you built it, somebody would buy it and ask here how it compares to a U87. Somebody might suggest you use the drumsticks as overheads - that type of thing. You should just drum with a pair of C1000s to get this out of your system. |

hahahaha i wanna hear that too
now, seriously...if you make aside the weight problem...you still have the phase issues...imaging both mics moving like crazy all over the kit and then listening in mono...all the "swoosh'ish" sound haha but hey, maybe smoking that shit will make you come up with an idea of mic'ing a classic guitar by putting tiny mics on your fingers (just kidding)
