896HD Monitoring Chain

Hey People/professionals/recording enthusiasts/spammers...lol
I have recently acquired a Motu 896hd and I also use a behringer headphone amp (which sounds better than any Grace HiFi headphone amp..not really)
Anyway, I need to use the stereo out on my Motu to use into the Beringer for monitoring on headphones while recording. The Behringer has a direct out right beside the in that isn't supposed to do anything whatsoever to the signal. So again, 896HD to Behringer headphone distro amp out to Mackie 624s.
No, I can't hear for myself. Is this likely to change my signal in a way that will make my mixing and eqing suffer? What do yall think?

I appreciate it

Thanks Brad.
I really appreciate the reply. Just curious, what do you monitor your headphone mixes through?

a behringer headphone amp, seems to work fine, stuff like that isnt really that important to me. I just use it for tracking.

You're using the headphone out on the front panel of your 896HD with a stereo cable to your Behringer, right?

tpreager is on a distinguished road
I use almost the same setup.

I have 2 MOTU 896's (not HD, so it doesn't do 192Khz, ah well...) and I connect the analog outs of channels 1 & 2 of the 1st MOTU (since these channels mirror the main outputs) to the MAIN input on the back of my Behringer HA4700. The headphone amp also has an AUX in on the front to which I can patch in another signal to each individual headphone channel for independent mixes.

Not sure why you would want to go through the headphone amp before the Mackie 624's, maybe your already using all the analog channel outs on the MOTU to a patch bay or something like that.

MOTU does reccomend that you plug your reference monitors into the MAIN outs your 896HD, but I guess the setup is up to you.

TP Reager

You are the best. Thank you so much for your advice. I will definately use the 1 and 2 outs that are mirrors of the stereo outs. That is the best solution. Thanks for your help. I know the answer was easy, it just didn't occur to me. I just got the Motu Unit and finished reading the manual, but sometimes things don't occur clearly until you realize them in a practical manner. So that was very helpful. So far I LOVE my Motu. I went from a lexicon Omega to it. It just seems so much easier and compatible with my computer. Strangely enough, it seems that all of the inputs and outputs are much easier to patch and select than with the Omega. Thanks again!
