need some help getting started

Hello all,
totally new at all this here and need help. I have some decent gear (mics, mixer, 4track and such) I used back when I played in bands years ago to record. Want to go digital now and create on my own...have a HP pavilion 750 n, cakewalk homestudio XL and a motu 828... tried messing around with multitracking acoustic guitar tracks and couldnt get past latency when trying to add second track ...what do I need or what am I doing wrong?
