i didn't know stevie ray played the drums but probably pinstripes at a guess i'm not hugely familiar with his stuff, seems like the kind of gear that would be using a two ply head.

Well, SRV's drummer's sound is damn sweet, in my opinion. His newer stuff, just has the perfect tuning, pitch, tone, and eq'ing for great blues music. If you want his deader tone (not 70's dead) with still a good ring, use coated 2-ply heads on top, with clear 1-ply on the bottom (toms). I bet he used remo's, but you should search in yahoo for that. Also, go to the evans drumheads website and you can look up any type of configuration you might want to you for whatever styles. It even defines the sound for you. His toms in latter days have a good dip to them, I tune my toms the same. A few adjustments tighter than wrinkles on top, and the bottome head tuned one third note higher than the top.
His snare sounds like he uses a deeper wood shell, maybe 6"-6.5. He tunes it slightly deeper from tight to give it a good 'swap' sound. He uses obviously a coaetd head on top of the snare.
His kick isn't ringy or boomy, but the eq'ing is still bass heavy with a little attack. Try a Clear or coated beater-side head with a muffle ring, and a coated front head. If you put a hole in the front, its easier for micing as you know, and the sound is more focused. tune the beater side just tighter from wrinkles. Tune your front head just tighter than your beater head.
