phantom power and rack units

hello !

I have a rode nt1, im about to record some vocals and wanted to go via my behringer composer pro then into my soundcard.

the nt1 requires phantom power, my soundcard (tascam us122) can provide phantom power.

so is it as simple as chucking the composer into the link and switchin on phantom ????

Im anxious about doing this incase i blow my composer

any ideas ?

It won't hurt your composer, but the unit won't pass phantom power. The mic won't work plugged into your composer. It needs to be powered first. Run the composer on the insert on your tascam. This is like an effects loop on a guitar amp. You need an insert cable. The signal goes out, through the composer, and back into your tascam.

Are you sure? I would think the composer would have a differential output instead of a transformer balanced output which would mean that Behringer either put blocking capacitors in the signal path [which would fuck with the sound of the unit] or you will be able to pop the chip that drives the output [like the TL Audio crap] if you hit the backend with phantom power.

Other than that... no, you can't use the phantom from your soundcard to drive a mic through another unit.

True enough. The composer has servo-balanced outputs, but I did make the assumption that the caps on the output would be of sufficient voltage to handle phantom power.

It doesn't matter. It won't work anyway. Just hook it up with an insert cable, and you are good to go.

hey, setting up to get the vocals done today and having a few problems

setting it up the way i was advised, i can now see that my compressor is getting a signal

however, im not getting anything back from it

any ideas ???

Are you using an insert cable or just a standard Y-cable? An insert cable would have the TRS plugs on one end, and two TS plugs on the other. A standard Y-cable would probably have TS plugs all around, and would send signal to the compressor but wouldn't return anything back.
