8-track/ 8 mics
I was going to buy a 16 track recorder but have recently decided to get an 8-track (on 1/2") instead. I want to spend the money i save on really nice mics. I want to be able to record a drum set only using 6 tracks. here are two setups i have in mind:
SM7- Kick Sennheiser 421 (x2)- toms Beyer M201- Snare Oktava 012 (x2)- Overheads AT 4060- Vocals/Misc/Bass Beyer M160- Guitar amp OR D112- Kick SM7- Snare Sennheiser 421 (x2)- toms AT4033 (x2)- Overheads KSM44- Vocals/Misc/Bass Royer R121- Guitar amp Also, is it better/worse to use LDCs on drum overheads instead of SDCs? Is it better to have them matched or to use two differnt mics for overheads? PS: sorry to those who get sick of my "rate my mics"questions, but i like microphones, and i like talking about them. |

I'm not sure if you could go wrong with either of those setups... (wish i could have those mics haha). I have a D-112 and am very happy with it on kick, I've heard great things about the Beyer m201 on snare, as well as MD-421s on toms/snare/guitar/etc...
I've really heard good things about all of those mics you've mentioned on this BBS (unfortunately havent had personal experience with all of them). I was actually thinking about picking up a sennheiser md421 or beyer m69/201 here soon for snare/guitar/toms/etc. As far as LDC/SDC on drum overheads.... i think the general concensus is that LDC tend to be a little more colored than SDCs... I used to use a pair of MXL v57m (ldc) mics as overheads but i recently upgraded to Audix scx-ones (sdc) however they're so different in sound and $$ that I really can't compare them in terms of SDC and LDC (just that the SCX-ones rock heh). I would assume it would be good to at least have the same type of microphone on OH's but I've heard a matched pair isn't necessary for drums. I'm sure someone who has more personal experience with these mics will chime in sometime... all i can say is i dont think you can go wrong there....
