The answer is both. The mix settings are different depending on how you use it though. When used as an insert the mix setting of the reverb box is 100%, as the mix is handled by the board. When using it as an inline effect the mix setting will typically be much lower, as the reverb box itself has to control how much effect to mix with the dry signal.

There are books on all this kind of stuff, you need to do some reading.

One really good book on mixing is called "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" and is by Bobby Owsinski. I'd highly suggest you purchase it and use it as a reference. I keep it around for that reason, and have read it over and over.

An excellent book about fx is called the "Wizoo Guide FX", and is by Thomas Adam. It will answer the question you posed here, and many more, and is written in a very clear and understandable style. Highly recommended.

SonicAlbert's absolutely right, but as a generalized answer to your 'generalized' question: reverb is typically an Aux-connected processor as it's often applied to multiple tracks; Insert-connected processors would include compressors and gates.
