How to mix these drum tracks?

I have just recorded some drum tracks over at a friend of mine, and now I need some guidance. I have never worked with live drums before, just samples, so I have no idea where to begin with this.

We could only record at two tracks at a time, so we decided to record snare/kick on one track and overhead on the other. When I got home and listened to the recordings, I wasn't really impressed with the work we did. It just doesn't sound as good as I was hoping it would be. I've tried playing around with EQ etc., without any luck on getting the sound I'm looking for.

I would appreciate if anyone would like to listen to the tracks and tell me if this is a lost case, or maybe guide me on how to make it sound better.

Mic's at kick / snare
Overhead mic

Thanks!

I'm curious to know how you placed your OH mic. It adds a lot of depth to the kick sound. To help get a stereo sound, it would really help to do the recorderman technique with your 3 mics. Search around for the thread. When I have used this technique, I haven't had to add hardly any EQ. And if you record at 24 bit, it's fairly easy to do without compression on the way in as well. Sorry I can't give advice on the clips you posted. It might help if you post them together as one clip.

Thanks for the reply, pdadda.

The overhead is placed above the center of the drum kit, it actually hang from the ceiling. I wanted to do the recorderman technique (or something similar to it anyway), but we had only one condenser microphone, and so we thought it would be better using the microphones as we did. I can see now that we were wrong.

I will probably not use the snare / kick-track at all, and rather focus my energy on getting the overhead to sound acceptable. Maybe we'll get a chance to record it over again soon.

Having one condensor mic is not a problem. I have found great results using two SM57's as my OH's and a Behringer B-1 on the kick. Its hard to have a cheaper set-up than that.

can you create a mix to stereo?

if so, spend some time getting the mix just right and record it...

minimum mic setup...
