Midi Time Code confusion!

Can someone please explain MTC to me. What is it for? Is it similar to SMPTE? Do you need special hardware for it?

Yes, it's similar to SMPTE. You don't need special hardware to use it with MIDI devices, like using the time code from a sequence on your computer to control the sequencer in a drum machine, for example... but to use it to synch to tape or other SMPTE-savvy devices you need a box that will convert between MTC and SMPTE.

You do, however, need the midi devices in question to be equipped to be an MTC master or slave --- or both.
