why doesn't my usb cable work

I have just bought a new computer. It does not have a joystick port on it, as my old computer had, just the USB. I went to the music store and purchased an M-Audio USB midi cord. I installed the software, but can not get the Keyboard to work on my midi program. I'm using Magix studio deluxe 2004. (trying to find something else, i just downloaded n-track) I used to use cakewalk midi express. That program always worked well, with my midi, when i used joystick. i want to get into using virtual instruments and such. I just can't get my midi to work. any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Excuse me if I'm just being thick here- I'm not raggin' on ya:

One end of the USB cable is plugged into your new computer.

Where is the other end inserted?

Did you load the drivers for the MIDI interface?
Did the computer recognize the device when you connected the USB?
Have you set your MIDI programs to use that device's I/O?
