A home speaker will work but not ideal....why...
A studio class monitor is basically a very high spec hi-fi speaker. These are acoustically designed to give extremely high quality sound. A totally flat frequency response is essential. This high end speaker design is needed because it's a 'reference' in the studio and gives the producer and engineer a 'none coloured' listen to what the song should sound like. That's important in order for the final mix to sound great on everyone else's hi-fi at home, or maybe even just on a car cassette player. Yes, monitors are expensive, but what you get for your money is professional quality mix's and a true reproduction of the original recording. Never be tempted to mix a recording using a set of speakers unless its all you can afford. Your mix will end up sounding as cheap as the speakers you're trying to mix with.

I'm going to throw up a baby Advent I have laying around as a rear surround. It seems to sound pretty good for what it is, however, I would start with a stereo mix done on monitors, then create the surround panning.

Those small guys don't have much bass though, I will probably rolloff at 100Hz for the surround speaker (not in the final mix though). So I think it would be tricky if those were your mains.
