mixer?

i plan on buying a fostex vf80ex with cd burner,that can only record two tracks at a time, well anyways, i was wondering if i could get a mixer with lots of inputs in it, and then record a bunch of mics onto one track, like a drum set, and still use the other track?

You can do that. Probably won't sound too good as putting many sources on one track severly limits you in the mixing stage, but if you are just trying to get some ideas recorded it can work.

You might have better luck recording the drums with both inputs and overdubing everything else.

Like Eric says, you can easily do that, but it limits your control over the sound massively. If one part of the instrumentation over powers all of the others, you cant do anything about it because its only been recorded via one track.

If you have the time and effort to keep recording and getting it "just right" go for it

All depends on your budget. You want a decent desk with enough channels to record multiple tracks, also, if your going to be using condenser mics, ensure it has phantom power. Work out how much you can spend, and then have a look around. Mackie Desks are always a good choice to go with..
