recommend an analog distortion sound for vocals

any ideas, I am mixing this part where this guy is yelling, not singing, but yelling, like he is in a fight. I want to put some distortion on it to give it a cool effect. I just want something real soft, but still constant thruout the entire thing. Any ideas? Plugins are not an option.

Run it through a guitar amp set to stun. Or do the vocal through a mic like a Shure Green Bullet.

Pedals from Tech21 usually works fine for this when put in an effects send/return. Works well on other things too, to make it more dirty, drums for instance.

Use two mics on two channels.
On one channel put it through a guitar fx pedal on a distorted setting, experiment to see which is best.

The other mic channel is clean.

record the vocal take with both mics channels simultaneously.

Come mixdown you just mix the two tracks back to one to taste, with as much or little distortion as required.

Works well for me.

Talking mxr

Hey, I always use a fuzz/distortion box from MXR when I wanty it to rip. It's a vintage MXR distortion + for guitar, but I guess any fuzzbox will do the trick. It does it for me anyway...

Cloneboy Studio will become famous soon enough
Extreme compression with a characterful compressor or plugin does wonders. The Sansamp PSA-1 or Amp Farm TDM's work wonders too.
