They're looking for "the next big thing". And no, they don't know what it is either. They just know it has to look good in tight jeans.
Seriously, apart from some very ultra-indie web-only labels, you're not gonna find too many A&R guys hanging around here. Check the TAXI listings (though I'm not advocating membership). |

You should play live, build a big following and very good local buzz, after that you should set up a tour of cities and states close to you and build a following there, and create buzz there. Get your music to college stations and see if they'll play it, and then you can get even more buzz about your band, and then the labels will come. I don't know a lot about getting record deals, but I don't think you're going to find one by asking on a web board.

Why not just be good for one, then have a good mgr. pick you up that is directly connected with a label.... thats how I did it.
