1/12 vs. 4/12 For recording purposes

I've been using both my 4/12 and my 1/12, the latter of which is in an ampeg VT160.

I honesly can't tell which I prefer.
I've spent so much time trying to critique my sloppy, nasty Peavey 4/12, that I'm not sure if I've polished this piece of shit, or if I actually prefer it...

So what is the consensus on this?

in my expierence, 4x12's give 4 different variations on tone.

where as on a 1x12, you only have 1 speaker. 4 gives you 3 to fall back on if one you don't like.

also, 4x12's are A LOT louder

Being loud in a recording session is usually not a very good thing. But I agree the 4x12" has more tonality options. However, the 1x12" speaker could be driven harder by the power amp stage before frying everyones ears, for a better recorded tone.

I'm a fan of small combos and cabinets when it comes to recording. The wall of 4x12" is for live gigs IMO.

I think it's much easier to find a sweet spot with 1x12. My opinion of course. I haven't really tried to record a 4x12 because I don't have one anymore. The one I did have was for my bass. And that sucker was LOUD! I am using a 10 inch now for my guitars. I like the mids in a 10 inch, I don't know, maybe I'm weird....
