Welcome to the board. It depends. What do you do with what you have already? Does it work for you? Actually, your recording skills are what you still need if that isn't enough gear. BTW, this is the studio design forum, where people ask questions regarding their recording space, not equipment. Post your gear questions in the gear forums. If you need information regarding studio spaces, or are having problems with acoustics in your room, ask here.

You must have a damned good job, for a 19 year old.
That's a nice chunk of change tied up in software and plugins alone.

READ THIS. It should tell you what you need to know. If you have questions afterwards, we will try to help then. BTW, 10x12 is NOT square. http://searcht.netscape.com/ns/boomf...acoustics.html

StudioMxPx,
It sounds like you've got a good set of recording tools for now. The rest can be broken down into learning how to use what you've got and gettting your room functional enough to make recording the pleasure it should be. As Rick suggested, it would be good to spend some time learning about basic acoustics and room layout. Your space is fine for a beginner studio (heck, mine is only 8x8), but it sounds like it needs some repair. I would suggest you spend some time, also, over at http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html in the Acoustics section. Learn the basics of acoustic design elements, and review the sample studio designs posted there. The bedroom studio, in particular, should be of interest for you. Good luck, and don't be shy about asking questions. We really do try to help out around here, even though some of us get a little cranky from time to time. If you act like you want to learn, and don't become a smart alec, we in turn will provide as much helpful information as we are able to. Cheers, Darryl..... |

um... bigdaddyd i have heard you talk about ripping other people off also. i don't think if you were to have or do have thousands of dollars invested in recording and live music and pro audio equipment you would want it ripped off. good day sir.

Yes, I have sarcasticly posted to have addresses listed.
If I was your mommy, Id have said, "dont list all your items on that websight, someone is going to see them, see where your located, and come rip all your things off". Im not anyones mommy so I posted a little reminder that was sarcasticly intended. Look, people spend thousands to hide items (pawnable items) from the view of theifs. The world is full of people that would rip us off and not even care. To list everything you own for the world to see, and to have the city and state you live in, and your age... All thats left is listing your address and your a victim. Addressess arent that hard to come by. I was really only looking out for all of us, but if it was taken wrong, sorry ya'll. I wont do it again. And FYI, id rather die than take something from another person.. D

I'd say $4k in software is pretty amazing for a teenager. There was another kid in here boasting a similar collection of software and I had to ask, "Why would you need Nuendo, Sonar 3/4, and Cakewalk?" You should have saved the $2k and got Ntrack instead. That is, if you actually paid for any of it in the first place.

HangDawg - that was my initial assumption, but I refrained from stating such mostly because at 19, I had a small collection of recording hardware already and I worked full time, school full time, and did car audio installations on the side for extra cash.
Brandon - I think he was just making a point about someone posting their entire collection on gear on the internet, for security reasons. I've done that a few times myself, and my gear list is on my website in fact, along with my address. This is what alarm systems are for. ![]() |

Seems to me like it is cracked software. I hate to make assumptions, and you can deny all you want, but either you cracked it, or you have had no idea what you need. Your mic locker is nothing, less than a thousand in mics, yet, you have expensive, new edition, software and plugins, easily adding up to 4,000. Learn to spend your money, if you even have to buy anything.

Don't let Rick get to you, man. He just tends to spit out what a lot of us think but won't put into type. A lot of us "old farts" were raised in a time when the ability to spell correctly and put together coherent sentences meant the difference between graduating to the next grade or not. The internet shortcuts and stuff promoted by instant messaging really rubs us the wrong way since it is not the way our language is supposed to be and we don't want to see things change.
As far as the stuff you've got goes, again, don't let what anyone says get to you. If you're conscience is clear about how you got it then all is cool. It is frustrating for a lot of us who have tried to accumulate gear, software, and skills over great lengths of time to see someone young come into the game with everything sitting there waiting for them when all we can do is drool and wish we had the $$ to get the same stuff ourselves. It has only taken me 25 years to get a somewhat functional studio going since I initially decided I wanted to have one. If I was 19 again and had expendable income, I'd do the same thing you are. Unfortunately, I'm not and have other obligations that require most of my income to deal with, so I do what I can and keep plugging away at it. Now, to be serious, as mentioned in earlier posts, it sounds like you've got the gear lined up to get started but you need to do some work on your space. Do some homework and we'll try to help you figure out how to get a space that works for you. Cheers, Darryl..... |

Well, considering I live in a basement and am on the computer all the time and my studio is the room around me I don't have to worry about a security system.. I say if anybody has the balls to walk in my garage, past my dog, past my dad, and comes down stairs to jack my sh!t I'll grab a guitar and start swinging... haha. Anyways, I'm not here to argue, but I said "I'm not a little stupid rich kid like people may think", and you replied with "im a stupid rich kid too..". I don't know what school you went to but I'm glad I didn't go there, because I dropped out of school last year and as far as I can see my grammar is still a dash better. I wish my parents would help me pay for sh!t but as soon as I quit school and started working they pretty much said "you're on your own"... So far I don't think I've turned out too bad
