what lexicon reverb unit would u choose

ok, for the moment i'm just looking out for a reverb unit to use for Live,
on vocals mainly;,
and i'd also like to use thjat verb for Tracking in my studio,
so not Recording it, its gotto be nice enough to listen to, but its not gonna end up on a cd...

i heard lots of people say that the Lexicon Alex is real great for simple live vocals,
so i started to check all those 'cheap' lexicon verbs out,
seems like there's an entire bunch of fx....

can you guys quickly tell me what your favorite unit of the lexicon series is?

Without spending all the bucks on the PCM series (and not counting things like the jamman which aren't reverb units, and stuff that's $10,000) I would get an MPX 550, a used MPX-1, or an Alex. I used an Alex for a few years, and I quite liked it. It wasn't mine, or I would definitely still have it. Dead simple to use, and sounded good, if a bit noisy. If I remember, it is basically reverb and echos. One or two parameters for each effect, and you can save your own sounds. The 550 is a step up, is way more programmable, and has more effects. It can also do two separate fx at once. The MPX-1 is a pretty good step up from that. The last two are 24 bit blah blah blah digital in and out blah blah if you need that stuff, and give you more options, like if you want to throw that big flange on the psychedelic vocals. Also quieter. But Alex units are cool, and for live a bit of noise is OK! A great way to get started for not a lot of cash.

Alex- seen 'em for under $100
550- $350-$400 new
500 (old 550) $200-$250 used
MPX-1 $400-$500 used
PCM series $800-$1500 used

Of those you listed the PCM 81 and 91 or definately the best ones for both live and studio. In fact, the PCM stuff will be nicer than 95% of the software reverbs out there. In a more realistic budget range, the mpx 550 and mpx1 are very flexible boxes and still sound better than maybe 85% of your software verbs.

On another note though, i would maybe look into a used yamaha spx900 or 990. I have seen spx900's going for as little as 250 used. That Yamaha may be the most requested reverb ever for live band's riders. I have 6 of em and they are very solid, easy to use, and good sounding boxes.

The lexicon MPX110, MPX550, & MPX1 all use the same lexchip reverb technology. This makes these units reverbs sound pretty much the same. However, the 550 & MPX1 have greater adjustability over the 110 which makes them far more "flexible" than the 110.

They are the same lexichip, but that doesn't mean they sound the same. There is some truth to that statement though.

I can attest to this - I have had both the 100 and 500 and 550, and there is a large sonic difference between the 100s and the 5x0s.

i bought me an Alex to start with,
am real curious about the results,

right now i can only compare it with Digitech, Zoom, Boss guitar pedal reverbs, software or the alesis midiverb

so i'm kinda sure the lexicon will sound 'better' than those,
i just didn't have the oppertunity to work with decent units...

i'll probably end up writing a review about this unit,

I owned and Alex and I almost cried when it went out on me. Its very easy to use with some great sounds. I used mine for live sound so I don't know how it will sound for recording. I thnk you've inspired me to get another one. I currently have a MPX-500 which is nice.

i bought my Alex mainly for LIVE or for tracking,
most singers prefer some reverb in their headphones,
i think this lexicon will give great reverbs just for tracking

and i'm absolutely sure it will be used on LOTS of test recordings too,
maybe even real mixdowns, but we'll see about that

and ehm, $79.97 for some sort of Firmware upgrade for the Mpx500

or is this a Real chip you put in the unit?

Yes - I had to open my unit up, remove the old eeprom, and insert the new one.

I really like the MPX500. I don't know how it sounded before the upgrade. It came with cheap and just took everything out of the box and installed the cheap. I figured it was an upgrade - had to be better
