Chords - Add9 and '9'

Hi,

I ran into this question from someone:
what's the difference between an 'A add 9' chord, and an 'A9' chord?
I think it's that in the A9 case, you also play the 7th (one step down) in the chord, along with the 9th?

A9 is a dominant, it also includes the flat 7th. Aadd9, also referred to as Aadd2, does not imply a 7th.
