I love the Waves Renaissance Verb. It's definitely the best of what I've used. When you start playing with the pre-delay, diffusion, eq curve, etc.. you can really get those things sounding great. The look and feel of it is great as well. I don't know what I would do without it.

Wave IR-1 with a high quality Lexi 960 sample. Smokes the other waves verbs, my UAD's, my TC's etc...

I like the waves but it keeps locking up Audition on me when using the DX plugin.
I just finished a project and used Ambience (Free VST) plug in.

Yea, I think the convolution reverbs, in general, are far superior to anything else out there ... and in many instances are on par with or even better than the outboard stuff, depending on what you're trying to do with it.

Sony Accoustic Mirror ... Waves' IR-1 ... Space Designer ... TL Space and a bunch of others I can't think of off the top of my head. All good.

Next best thing to recording in nice accoustic spaces with room mics, although not yet a substitution. Almost there, though.

If that's the case then I'd add the free SIR and Convo Boy and the bargain price Pristine Space to the list of convolution reverbs:

SIR
Convo Boy

For a few bucks from Voxengo:
Pristine Space

Zillions of free impulses at www.noisevault.com

I haven't used Convo Boy yet but like SIR and Pristine Space a lot. I'm not in a position to judge how good these reverbs are (I don't own Waves) but they sound real good to me.

Where are some good places to get IR's?

Are the IR's that come with the WAVES Ir-1 any good?

I tried SIR with some 960 impulses and it sounded very un-natural and metallic IMHO

I've been using Dreamverb and Plate-140 both exclusive to the UAD-1 the plate 140 sounds wonderful on vox. YMMV

There are many different sample sets of the same models out there. Not all sound as good as some of the better ones. I have completely stopped using Dreamverb since I got the Waves IR and the samples I am using. Maybe it has something to do with the way SIR implements? I don't know. All I know is that I am using the Waves IR and the Eventide Eclipse presets are nearly indistinguishable from my hardware Eclipse. It's a cpu hog though, but I have a pretty beefy tower

What kind of computer hardware are you running? How many instances can you run simulataneously (stereo)?

Thanks.

Well, considering the fact that they went out and derived impulses from some of the the top recording studios in the country, i.e. Westlake, Sound Emporium, etc. ... and major concert halls ... I'd say they're up to snuff.

The EMT is up there at the top, even better than some of the SIR sounds. However, its not as broadly versatile as the SIR.

Wink

an impulse (if i'm correct) is a sound that is played back in a space (like a church) and then its recorded,
so when you record that you got the sound + the reverb of the church you recorded it in...

now a convolution reverb is a plugin that uses these impulses to calculate the reverb you want to put on your audio signal

..somethign like that,
so this means that i can go record a sound in my bathroom, give you the impulse, and then you kinda got my bathroomsound on your computer

cool isn't it?

cheerz

I am running an Athlon 64 bit bit system (xp3000+ ? ) with only 512 megs of RAM. IN the average project I run about 32 tracks at 24/44, with maybe 40 or so plugins on inserts, delay on aux send and anywhere from 2 to 4 stereo waves IR's at full (not the processor saving version) with no real problems.

My system runs (using Nuendo) for anywhere between 40 and 100 hours a week. In the 6 months I have had it, I have only needed to reboot because of a Nuendo ( or recording related problem) probably twice. I even let my antivirus, weather applet, internet etc... run in the backround.

Do yourselves a favor guys and try this plugin! I have a 100% "conversion rate" with this one. Everybody that tries it agree's that it is the best thing available right now.

Convolution reverbs sound great, as long as you don't try to adjust the original impulse. They just seem to get grainy and yucky sounding once you do ANYTHING to them. If the stock impulse works well for you, great! I have tried a bunch of carefully done impulses, and while the unaltered versions sound great, once I started messing with decay, high pass filters, low pass filters, etc....they went to crap. Oh well.

Try RoomVerb M2 guys. This thing simple kills the competition right now.
Wow...you should write advertising copy for this company...oh, wait you already are!

I used to use the Spinaudio Roomverb (the m2 version). It's decent, but in no way would I endorse it the way it was above. I feel the same about the PSP vintage warmer. They can be fun, but they really aren't that serious in my opinion. For me, the UAD1 reverbs both clean house on the Spin Audio verbs, the TC verb does, and I have had no problems changing convo's. I really do think with convolution that it's the sample that makes all the differences. The problem is that there are lots of different samples of the same thing out there. What I did really like about the room verb though were the shorter tailed verbs, and it's lack of CPU usage.
