what is wrong with people - soundproofing on tv

what is wrong with people (tv show on soundproofing)
Just watched an episode on weekend warriors - a home improvement show on HGTV. This guy wanted to turn his detached garage in a populated area into his 'drum studio" for rocking out to CDs.

Let's talk about some questionable builind tactics (and btw the guy was acting like he was a total pro):

-Left a single paned window to the outside
-2 exterior walls - fiberglass batts with 1 layer of sheet rock
-Built an interior wall (good thing) that was tilted 6 inches top to bottom (for added sound absorbsion) - whether or not this works for sound absorption (i don't think so - i think maybe he was thinking non parallel walls for less standing waves) it seems to be very structurally questionable - then he also hung a wooden work bench on the side that titled out. plus it was a pain in the ass to build and cover.
-4" fiberglass batts on the walls - no caulking
-2 air masses on the inside
-carpet (fire hazard me thinks) remanants on every surface (for added sound absorption
-Hollow core door
-no talk of mass, decoupling, rc, misconceptions about soundproofing. just some guy and his stoner friend hanging carpet backing

And at the end everyone is happy and 'my neighbors don't even know I am there' WHAT?????

While I have not constructed my rooms yet, i have built a bathroom and laundry rooms with new exterior walls - 6" walls, fiberglass, lots of mass, exterior styrofoam sheathing, cement siding, caulked, windows insulated and weather stripped - and you can still kinda hear the street noise (these were not soundproof exercises at all).

i know it is hard work to make a room tight, and then i watch this show - it can't be true, can it? Just makes me remember what it was like to live in blissful ignorance

Adam,

shows like that are a joke - the only thing funnier being people who watch them and don't realize it.

I also felt the same way every time I saw bob the villa guy on TV when channel surfing....... not a friggen clue -

No. Do you believe everything you see on tv? MOST of the home improvement shows I've seen are pure bullshit. This one is especially full of it.

Many home improvement shows are product-placement exercizes for building products. However this example seems particular eggregious in terms of how fallacious it is.

I saw this too. It was pretty bad. He could have at least doubled up the drywall. BTW- theres no structural problem by constructing the wall the way he did- out of plumb. Maybe a bit un-practical but not particularly unsafe.
