Just the tracks

Hi y'all,

I have been lurking around reading this board for a while, so I thought I'd jump in and post something.

I'm in the very final phases of recording a CD that is going out to be mixed the first week of January. I thought it might be interesting to post a rough static mix of just the bare tracks and then maybe come back and compare the final product after mixing a few weeks from now.

This is called "Girl Across the Street". All tracks were recorded with no compression or EQ applied, just bare and basic.

Hi there,
Welcome aboard the site, I've been here for a while now. Soak up as much knowledge as you can here. There's alot to be learned and don't forget about gearslutz.com or recforums.prosoundweb.com either.

Now on to the song.The bright side is you've got decent tracks to work with. The first thing that comes to mind is the need for panning. It seems like everything is competing smack dab in the middle. Reserve the middle for lead vox and bass. The secret to a great mix is hard panning. Its not uncommon for me to usually pan rhythm guitars hard left and right. Drums are usually spread across the stereo field. Pan those keyboards to opposite sides and spread out the bg vocals hard to.
I enjoy the song and there is some good playing there. However, youll need some light compression for the lead voice maybe 4:1 with about 3-5 dbs of
reduction. Youll have to fool with the attack and release to get it to sit right.
Fight the urge to reach for the EQ. Pan everything judiciously, adjust the volume levels, and ignore the computer screen. Monitor with your ears and use eq to carve out spaces for instruments that are masking others.

I haven't even attempted to mix these, they are going out to be mixed so I just kind of threw them up there to get some ears on the tracks. I recorded stereo tracks on just about everything, not that everything is going to wind up that way in the mix, but so the options are open to either mix an instrument to mono or pan it out stereo. Right now I just have the guitar, piano and hammond panned out to different degrees of left and right.

Glad to hear the tracks sound good though, I am going to try and post the result next month after the mix/master is done.
