How do I use an MRL tape?

Hi,

I'm trying to service my Otari MX-5050 1/2" 8-Track myself more and more these days, as the service folks in my area charge a small fortune to do simple repairs. I'm wondering how to use an MRL tape, and if anyone knows where I can score one for my Otari?

thanks!,

This is definitely one area that I recommend you purchase brand new from MRL. I would avoid the used MRL test tapes on eBay because there are too many unknowns. They may not be the tape claimed, or could be worn out (levels low from use) or may be old tapes with sticky shed.

The instructions for use are similar, but specific to each machine, so you really need a service manual for your Otari.

MRL has a guide to choosing the right test tape and general instructions on their website

Here's some helpful info from Eddie

Another way from Bill Vermillion
