Soundcards

does anyone have a link to a page that would show pics of a firewire connector? I've found a nice Edirol interface that would fit my needs, but I want to make sure my PC is compatible.

Am I to understand that a firewire interface negates the need for a new sound card? Would I still need a mixer??? (I plan on purchasing Sonar 4... so will I be able to handle input levels thru software or do I still need mixer?)

if you have an external firewire recording devise, you will not need an internal soundcard. The firewire device will act as your soundcard. If you device doesnt have any way to adjust the meters, you will need something to make sure nothing clips before it hits the firewire device. A mixer, compressor, or microphone preamp will all do this.
