How do folks have their monitors hooked up?
I'm currently using my computer speakers as monitors, and work pretty good.
They are pretty good speakers. However, I am concerned on line noise, and was wondering if most folks have their monitors setup from their soundcard or from their mixer's (control room out)?

All my monitors are connected to a Presonus Central Station switcher, allowing me to effortlessly switch between sources and monitors......

So you mean it anticipates when you would normally think to switch monitors and/or sources then does it for you? |

Effortless means "without effort".... and I never considered reaching over and hitting a button "effort", but then again, not everyone has the same tactile strength or ability, so maybe it's "effort" for you......... ![]()

n. 1. The use of physical or mental energy to do something; exertion. So you get to make a new meaning for the word now? |

What's there to explain, Ed? I'm asking you to knock off your bullshit.
Seems crystal clear to me... or do you have a comprehension issue? Actually, I suppose you do, since the word "effortless" seemed to confuse you..... ![]()

Well, now that it's clear what effort means or not....
[QUOTE:Blue BEAR]All my monitors are connected to a Presonus Central Station switcher, allowing me to effortlessly switch between sources and monitors......[/QUOTE] I do not know what a Presonus Central Station switcher means (so I'll assume - again taking the risk of making myself look like an asss), but I suppose it's as you mentioned an electronic device in which you could choose what you are connected to? Anyway, does that mean that your computer soundcard is also connected to this device? Am I correct in assuming that when you are recording you hear the sound comming directly from the source (via mixer & routed through the switch) and when you listen to the recording you switch to the feed coming from the computer? In other words, when you are recording the sound coming out of the monitors does not go through your computer soundcard first?

For me it's:
Soundcard-->mixer-->pioneer receiver-->monitors well, until April-ish when I use my tax refund to buy a dedicated amp for my non-powered monitors.

I have two sets of monitors. My Tannoy Reveals are hooked to the control room out on my mixer. I use them primarily during tracking to adat. I also have a set of Roland DS-90's which are fed from the SPDIF out from my DAW soundcard. The Rolands also have analog inputs, which I have routed from one of the stereo outs on the mixer, so I can flip a switch on the back of each Roland and feed them from the mixer too if I want to.

I have a pair of Yamaha msp5's hooked up as follows:
soundcard output (cranked up to max. level) goes to a stereo channel on a sony md4 4 track mini disc recorder with mixer section (i'm using it as a mixer because my mixer is broken)."Monitor output" of md4 is then connected directly to speakers. Et voila'! Greetings! |

Was that really Ed?
I don't have much gear, no headphone amp or anything, and I connect my 'monitors' and headphones etc through a little mixer connected to my soundcard output. The mixer in question is a Yamaha MG10/2 ... but we won't talk about that here! ![]()

Okay! So what I see is that most people (with the exception of one person) are going through their soundcard to get their input into their monitors.
Is it easier to control or are there reasons for connecting your monitors to your soundcard, instead of your mixer directly. Why aren't monitors connected directly into the Control Room output of your mixer? I don't know but it seems that the signal makes one big loop. From your MIC through your mixer into a soundcard back out through the output of the soundcard through some other device (or two) and into the monitors. I would have thought that going from your MIC through your mixer out to the monitors would be a much better signal. So I'm a little confused why is everyone going through all of those electronic devices?

soundcard > mixer> monitor. I have multiple soundcards and multiple monitors the mixer lets me choose what goes where.
