Does anyone have suggestions for making a drum-machine sound as little like a drum-machine as possible.
I already keep them as far back in the mix as possible and I use effects, reverb etc. to desguise them. Or if this topic has been discussed just direct me to the closest archive. Thanks, Rusty |

I tend not to add too many effects to my patterns. However, after I get the "content" of the pattern the way I like it, I go back and fiddle with the level of individual "strikes". Usually some subtle variation is enough.
I found this to be most effective on ride cymbals, hi-hats, sweeps/rolls, etc. For simple patterns on kick and snare (i.e. snare on the 2s and 4s, etc) I ususally don't bother since I'm lazy. However, when I get a little more intricate I put the variations in there, too. If it's appropriate, it also helps if you do more than play 8th notes on the hi-hat, snare on the 2s and 4s, etc., but sometimes that's all a song needs. It's a PAIN IN THE ASS programming this way, but I think it helps the patterns sounds A LOT more "human". It helps if you start with a drum machine with realistic-sounding instruments, but this should help no matter which drum machine you use. Hope you haev a lot of patience. |

I already change strike levels but your advice about high-hat and 8th notes is really
is good. I've also got a drummer with the same machine as I have, Doc Rhythm, to help me a little. He's edited the pads to sound like his kit. I'm hoping that will make a difference but some of the work I will still do myself. Thanks, Rusty K |

That's good advice from DaveO. Sometimes I use 2 different snare "voices", mix them till I'm convinced that no one else has ever produced such a cool snare. (I still have the day job)
I sometimes overdub live ride and crash cymbals. But usually, I'm lazy and do as little as possible. By the time I finish programming a song, my creativity for the rest of the song is out the window. BUD LIGHT. kmar |
