Br-1600 Question...
Hello,
I've searched the internet and my manual over and over, but I cannot find out how to route inputs to tracks. ie: If my cable is plugged into Input 3, how do I record that onto track 7, or etc. ? Boss Tech support says you can do it, but does not explain how. Anybody ? |

I think that you must have to be in Multi-Track mode, press the Multi-Track. All the track button will flash red. If press any buttons 1-8, you can record to tracks 1-8. If you press one the stereo tracks 9/10, 11/12, etc to can record to those tracks. You just arm that track by punching the button under the track you want to record until it flashes red.

I got all that.... but how do you decide what Inputs go to what track ?

Answer?
When you are in multi-track mode, the inputs correspond with the track numbers.

Okay... so if I go into a different mode (not Multitrack mode) how can I route the various inputs to the various tracks....
ie: I want input 7 to record on track 2, and input 3 to record on track 4 , etc. (This will prevent me from having to shut phantom power off all the time when I am moving xlr cables around, because it will prevent me from ever having to move cables at all ! ) |

The only thing I know of you could do, but it will take as many 'passes' as you have 're-routes', is go into bounce mode, then ARM the track you want to record to. So...if you want 7 to go to 2, arm 2 for recording, mute ALL other tracks, play the part. It will record to track 2. If you don't MUTE the other tracks, THEY will also record (bounce) to track 2. The other way is to just record it to track 7, then MOVE that track over to 2 once you are done. I know that is kind of a pain, but I don't believe you have any other routing options on the 1600. I've been using mine for quite a while now, and while these things can 'annoy', I find the unit in total to be awesome.
Hope this helps. steve |

I've laided down three guitar parts to different tracks while being plugged into input 1, just by arming the track I wanted to record to.

72....But I assume you did this in three passes, and were in bounce mode right? Seems to me that in INPUT mode, tracks 1-8 are directly mapped to either themselves, or 9-16. In bounce, you can record EVERYTHING you are hearing to whatever track is armed. Is this what YOU did? I believe that if you recorded one guitar, then listened to THAT while you recorded the 2nd guitar to another track while in bounce mode, you would hear BOTH parts recorded to the 2nd armed track.

Sp Clark...
This does help a bit. Let me ask you this...... Is there a clever way to apply the Input Effects (Cosm) onto already recorded parts using bounce mode ? ie: Record my guitar dry, and apply cosm to it as I bounce it ? Matt |

I think all you have to do is go into the effect (push the effects button), and there is a tab called location, select this and tell it what track to apply to.
hope that helps. Good luck steve |

Steve, no I wasn't in bounce mode. I record using either COSM effects or my Fender Cyber-Twin. If I'm using COSM effects, I plug into the guitar input and arm the track I want to record to.
Usually I record a ryhtum guitar to Track 1, plug in my P-Bass in the guitar input, arm Track 2, record, than a vocal, plug mic into mic input, record to Track 3. Thinking about this, this may only work in 'Input' mode. Later I'll try and record using my Cyber-Twin pluged in a input and see if I can record to a different track. |

I learn somethin new every day....I didn't know you could do that. I will have to give it a shot. I wonder if the guitar input is handled differently than the rest of em. It seems that I have tried to record cross track like that but got nuthin upon playback.
Thanks for the info. steve |

If its anything like the 1180 which I have then you only have to press the button under the track slider to enable the track you want to record to. It doesn't matter which input you use. There are only two inputs on the 1180 though. BTW how many inputs does the 1600 have?

I have a BR-8 and it works the same as the 1180. The BR-1600 has 8 inputs, you can record 8 tracks at a time and playback 16 tracks.

Ok, I'm STILL confused. Here is what still does not make sense to me about what people are saying about input mode. Let's say I have more than ONE track I am recording at the SAME time, and I want say the input from track ONE to be recorded on track THREE, and the input from TWO on FOUR. I just don't see how arming the track button tells the 1600 what the routings are. I KNOW in bounce mode, it would record BOTH inputs to BOTH armed tracks. In INPUT, I think it will not record anything, unless track 1,2 or 9/10,11/12 are armed, in which case it would record them to their respective tracks.

I've had this thing for a week, and cannot figure out how to actually route multiple inputs to any multiple tracks that I choose. I don't think it can be done. I don't think this thing is that versatile.
Mode 1. Guitar Input --> Any Track you select Mode 2. Vocal Input --> Any Track you select Mode 3. Multi-track --> Fixed Routing (ie. Track 3 to Input 3) Mode 4. Stereo Tracks --> 2 Inputs go to 2 consecutive Tracks I have seen that on the Tascam and Yamaha equivalents, you can simply press an INPUT2 button and then TRACK7 button, and voila! You are now routed. I sadly don't think this thing is capable. I think you have to work with the dummy modes, and switch cables around alot (meaning turning Phantom power off and on alot if you have Condensors). Matt |

If you use the guitar, or mic input, you can select any track, as long as there aren't any other inputs being used but (I found out) that if you use Multi-Track mode, the tracks are recorded from the corresponding input you use. I'm going to the NAMM show next month as a guest of Roland and I'm putting together a list of questions to ask Laura when I see her.

Does anybody here use synths? I don't have the br-1600 yet, but I'm trying to decide between it and the korg d1600mkII.
What I'm reading about the inputs kind of worries me even though I'm leaning toward the boss. Using a synth in input 1 or 2... could I use the guitar/bass or vocal mode to record tunes from the synth to different tracks? Also if I use a drum/bass machine... can I record it to an audio track? or must I use the the set bass or drum tracks? |

In regards to bass+drum tracks. They operate on tracks 13/14 + 15/16 but once you actually record them (using bounce mode) you can move those tracks ANYWHERE you want, and then use 13/14 + 15/16 for Normal Audio tracks if you like. Try not to read too much into the "modes", ie: guitar mode, vocal mode, etc. as they are really dummy features that are desgined to get a newbie up and running quickly. |

woooh!!..damn talk about confusing! I cam here because a friend was looking at a BR1600 and i didn't know anything about it ....if this routing is this discomboulated.... Maybe this will simplify things and help a few decsions be made.I have a Korg D-16 which is the older model of the D1600 mkii The main difference is the d-16 has permantely paired stereo tracks(9-10.11-12,13-14,15-16...which means only true stereo can be performed on these tracks. Like most synth patches..in other words the left out put would record only on track 9 and the right input only on track 10.....on the mixer there is only one fader for both tracks you can pan though.but it doesn't pan the track only turn one of them up or down....I know a bit confusing ..i have a feeling the BR 1600 is the same.. Okay now the D1600mkii ..it has 16 faders ..no group track/channels.You can still record stereo to them it's just more versatile.(point D1600mkii) The routing on the D1600mkii is cake!! One button push (input) page shows you the tracks 1-8..you choose from 8 inputs what track to record the input to.....viola ...done..The next page does the same for 9-16. There are no limitations on which FX to use for what type of input (that seems weird to me) There's a possible 8 inserts for recording or play back.(there's other algorithms for stereo Fx and whatnot) on top of that there are 2 Master FX sends (reverbs delays chorus ..lots of stuff!) for monitoring and mixdown...remember you can use the 8 insert Fx for mixdown also .. then a mastering Fx for the final stereo mix. ..then if you want more you can send any track or input signal OUT into a FX box and return it. The reality is if you want a lot of FX you can just bounce tracks and keep on adding infintium.... The Korg is about as user freindly as it gets..The buttons are clear the menus are sensible ENGLISH...the touch screen just makes it zip along.....From what i under stand the D16000 has a hot swapable hardrive thats you can use a lot of different models. It has it's drawbacks The Cueing on mine sucks...No FX...so if i want to monitor my tracks in the cue section it's all dry... No grouping for faders...I think most units don't have that. I don't like the buttons for input -playback record mode......you have to push each one off instead of having a universal......I'm lazy!! Other things I like Trigger in.....I have friend send me rythm tracks with a count in metronome as soon as the D-16 hears it it starts recording at 00.000.00 ..now our tracks will always line up. Wav form window ..for editing.....from what i hear the BR 1600 doesn't have this....the resolution isn't as tight as a puter but it's nice.... I got all tthe basic copy/move edits plus fade in (some don't have that) Optimize (like a disc de fragger for eleminating dead space Normalize 9raising the overall level to odb You can pre or post fader or see in a line graph where info is on the track.(thats a very handy tool when editing) Scrub(like slowy moving the tape faster or slower ) is great for more precise location markers for editing you can use the main wheel to scrub with EQ on both input or track built in mic for VERY fast inspiration recording.. Nuetrik XLR/14/ inputs quick scroll wheel Backup files.. import or export wav files use tempo maps built in drim machine (rudimentary) chain up to 7 scsi hardrives (or CDR as one of them) togther for up to 1000 gigs (yeah thats one thousand) can link two together The price looks great right now I think it's arounfd $1000....I got mine 5 years ago used for $850 There is a very good site dedicated to these machines with extremly knowledgable admin......a virtual tech help for free..... can you tell i like this machine!! I know how you feel Matt.I have (had) a ton of Roland stuff. I just got tired of translating and losing chunks of hair that I valuably need. I know theres a millions of folks that love this stuff but ...
I saw where someone was selling the recomended CD burners for the BR1180 at the amazing low price of only $199 down from $279 or something like that. Now considering you can use almost any CD burner on the Korg (and scsi at that ) for under $100......they are te kings of the add ons and MUST use their stuff at inflated prices. then they discontinue a line.....!! How many variations do they have to make of a recorder.....sorry Some one gonna kick my virtual ass but Roland is getting way to big. I live about 20 mile from the repair center (main American site) and they were of very little help.I had to talk to the main guy. I had a Synth pickup there for 6 weeks that took 5 minutes to fix!!( Iknow cause my buddy had the same problem and he did his himself)..... Okay I'm ranting..so my parting remarks are ...dang ol shoot man i tull ya wut man i just dang ol love Roland dang old manlike.THEY"RE THE BEST!! B |
