near-field monitors/balanced plugs
What is the optimal way to hook up nearfields?
My next two purchases are an audiophile 2496, so I can disable that dreadful onboard soundchip my dell has, (and a dmp3). Using the 2496, what's the best way to hook up my Yorkville ysm1p's? |

With powered monitors + balanced jacks, get the appropriate adapters and plug them straight into the outs of the soundcard.
If you're using a mixer to monitor through, plug them out of the control room outputs of the mixer again w/adapters as necessary. |

Output of the 2496 plugs into one of the stereo inputs on my mixer. I leave all the EQ flat on that input. Then the balanced outputs from the mixer into the balanced inputs in the YSM1P's using a couple of short (5 Ft.) mic cables. That's how I do mine.

But if you use a channel on your mixer, would that not make you loose the flat response of the monitor? If the channel has the normal 3 band EQ, then how do you get the true sound? I have often wondered how to monitor from a mixer and still get a true sound in my monitors. I would think you should use the 'tape in'. Currently, i use a Terratec EWS88/MT soundcard. I just use outputs 1 and 2 to my my monitors. But I would like to have a piece of hardware to control my volume rather than using the software control panel that came with the soundcard. What do you guys do?
