A few minutes? It takes ages, man. Not only that, but people change their minds over time as they learn, so what somebody said four months ago is not necessarily what they have to say today.

Yes, the archive's a treasure, but I'm completely in sympathy with someone who just asks a question here and now. Tell you what, how about you or me directing a newbie to a particular post in the archives?

I haven't so I'll just blindly tell what I've been told (its worked in the past right guys? Remeber the Aardvark thread? Thank you)

Check out the Event 20/20's, i think thats what they're called but I could still be hung up on the aardvark. I've been told they're pretty good and comparatively inexpensive. Yes?

How low is your budget? $15-20? I'll sell you my ancient Criterion speakers and Lafayette power amp. Got em free when a friend's parents moved.

Please, please, please... (I'm begging you for your own good) use the search function to find out all the multitudes of threads that cover this topic. It only takes a few minutes to search the entire BBS, and you will probably find more info than you actually need. Then if you have a specific question that's not answered, by all means post it.

If you are looking in the $500-$1000 range there are lots of options that will be covered by other previously posted threads.

I could have hammered this guy like I see other people here doing for asking such an open ended, generalized question. I decided to try and help him out by pushing in the right direction to do some research here on the BBS. Someone once told me to search the BBS when I asked a often repeated question, and I found worlds of info that I wouldn't have located otherwise. If FUNKY wants to read up on some of these threads, then post a more specific question concerning monitors (how much he wants to spend, powered or unpowered) then I'll do my best to answer.

Funky, if you want to know what other people are using for monitors: I've got Tannoy Reveal actives and I think they are great. I paid $600 USD last year. I recommend you go and listen to as many monitors as you can using a CD that you are familiar with before you buy any monitors, if you have a store located in your area that is.

I think you're right, basically - the archives are chocka with good stuff. But I still feel really sorry for newbies who show up looking for some kind of direction and get shown the door to the archives. Every time I get into the archives, I'm there for ages - it must be overwhelming for newbies.

It was interesting to re-read that second link you posted, by the way. I was thinking about S8-N yesterday, and about how he found it so difficult working with monitors that "didn't sound good".

Agreed, the next newbie is yours. I do have some sympathy for the way some of these newbies get shot down, mainly taking the abuse because of the few Ken Webbers that show up now and then. You're right, the archives can be tough at first to weed through, but worth it once the information is found.

I also thought it was funny to read some of those old posts from members that have been around a while.
