Studio Monitors and a crappy amplifier

Right now my setup goes like this:

SBLive out --> Technics Receiver SA-R477 (100w/channel) --> shitty Sony 2-way 4" woofer speakers taken off one of those 'mini-component' systems.

My speakers suck; I believe they are the weakest link in the chain. At the same time my other equipment isn't all that great either.

Since my speakers suck, I was thinking about buying new speakers and the thought of buying studio monitors crossed my mind (ie. Event 20/20).

I'm not rich.

Now my question is, would it be a waste of money to spend $300 on a pair of studio monitors when I have such crappy amplification/soundcard? Should I buy something else instead?

You can compensate you mix's for crappy speakers if you know them well.

You can't compensate for a crappy soundcard.
I would go for a good soundcard first and build up from there.

Crap in, is crap out. With good monitors he will be able to hear the result better. But can he do much to change it when he's not happy with what he hears?

A great mic through a weak soundcard wil sound bad and it won't help if you can hear it or not.
What if he records at home but want's to mix in a better place?

I'm not from the States but can he buy good monitors for $300 ?.

If I had a $ for every time I heard somebody say "What you mix on those ? ( NS10, Monitor One, Event 20/20 etc.. etc...) I could quit my day job. You buy a certain monitor and you've got 15 people telling you this one hypes this and that one hypes that. And of course the all famous
"No such think as Flat monitors".

Yes good monitors are a most but if you want good results on any kind of monitor, you have to know them - in short you compensate.

I personaly dislike NS10's. but the studio I'm working in now swear's by them. It doesn't bother me all that much becuase the engineer knows them inside out. When we start to mix he uses the NS10 and for me we switch to a HD-1 that I like and know better.

Speaking from personal experience.
Even a crappy amp and a middle of the road soundcard can benefit greatly from the Event 20/20s over garbage speakers.
That Technics receiver will work fine.
But you've still gotta learn how the stuff you know sounds on these speakers and extrapolate your mix to that template.

Wow you dug up an 8 year old post!

I'd contact Technics or a repair shop for info on that fan.

I stopped using my Technics receiver years ago... now you got me reminiscing... those were the good ole' days...
