VF-160 External pre's

I think this may have been dealt with before, but I just can't seem to get it right. How do you hook up an external mic pre so that it overides the pre's in the VF-160. And after it is hooked up, what is the procedure to record?

Thanks

I believe the only way to actually over-ride the interal pre is to go in via the inserts on channels 7/8.

Otherwise, go from the external outs through the 1/4" or XLR and turn the VF160 gain all the way down. Use the external input/output gains to adjust levels on the VF160.

I think Bill's right about the inserts: connect the outputs of your external pre to the 'ring' connector of a stereo jack, and plug it in to the insert. Or you could use a mono jack and only push it in part-way, but this is not so good I think.
Of course if the pre has a digital output you can connect that straight into the optical input on the Fostex.

Use the insert jack and push it in to the first click.
