If you help me I'll give you a kiss...

Hi.

Right now I've got mic - mixer - sound card - Cool Edit Pro

I'm quite new at using this program, and I've glanced at the manual and haven't quite found the answer I am looking for.

When I click on 'record', nothing is picking up on the main multi-track screen, but at the bottom the dB rating is getting picked up. Why is this?

Cheers.

Manning, thanks for your help before on my other topic that I've posted.

My sound card is an Audiophile 2496.

Now I'm not too sure how you go about checking that in Cool Edit, as that might be the problem.

I did click 'record' on the track.

My path:
Microphone-->Alesis MultiMix-->Audiophile 2496-->PC-->and right now, Cool Edit.

Also, can I just plug my guitar into the 1/4" jack on the mixer and record like that? Or do I need to mic a guitar amp?

Thanks

1. you just cant plug willy nilly guitars into mixers.
unless you have a di box, or a rockman, or some other device like
a vamp that converts the guitar impedence to line level.
you should read up on impedences on the net sometime.
so - for now - you should plug the guitar into an amp , and mic the amp.
2.your signal path is correct. CONNECT MIC TO 3 pin xlr on mixer.
3. in cool edit in the menus you will see (its been awhile sincve i used cool !)
where you set in preferences your drivers. you MUST identify the ap drivers
in and out for cool to use. its all in the cool manual on the cool install cd probably, and cool's built in help should tell you the procedure. go to help in the menus.
4.please also post your pc confign, and i'll tell you of any potential probs. NOTE...you MUST have 512 ram. cool needs memory from my experience.
peace. anymore Q's ?? - just ask. hold the kisses !!

Okay, the main thing right now that Im unsure of is that Cool Edit is not picking up the mic signal of the main screen. It picks up the dB's at the bottom of the screen.

I looked into the device order (Is that it?), and it lists in order:

Playback devices:
1. Wave Mapper [EV]
2. M-Audio Delta AP Multi
3. M-Audio Delta AP 1/2
4. M-Audio Delta AP S/PDIF

Recording devices are the same order, except it has M-Audio Delta AP Mon. Mixer in there.

Do these setting have anything to do with my problem?

My PC has AMD 2000+, 768MB Ram so Im sure that would be sufficient.

No kisses? How 'bout a pat on the head?

Still nothing...

I don't have the manual, but I downloaded one and it doesn't seem to have my answer (or I just can't find it).

Has anyone had this problem?

Can somebody show me a step-by-step of recording in Cool Edit Pro 2? I've used it before a while back, but not since I've obtained my new equipment.

Cool Edit picks up the dB's of the mic, but nothing records when I click on it.

If the db meters are moving when you hit record, that doesn't necessarily mean that the mic is working...it's just showing you the floor noise of your sound card...if the meters are kinda dancing a little bit in about a 3-5 db range randomly, that's just your soundcard.

If the meters jump dramatically when you speak into a mic, then it's obviously picking up a mic signal. If the meters DON'T jump when you speak into the mic, then you've either got too low a signal going to your soundcard (i.e., need a preamp) or you don't have the correct line in setting checked on your soundcard.

Tell us what it does when you speak into the mic.

The meters do jump when I speak into the mic.

I also did click on both the bottom record and the record button of the track.

difference. i talked to some friends of mine.
try this....as well....in cool edit prefs for 2496 ....
set recording and playback devices to AP 1/2.
tell me if THAT WORKS ! AND YOU GET WAVEFORMS. peace.
i would also email maudio. it could be that something in the AP control panel is not set up. dont worry. these control panels on these new generation sound cards are a pain to set up. but youll get it !
also tell me in cool what other drivers does it show for RECORDING ?

I clicked the record buttons in that order...nothing.

I also now set the recording and playback devices to AP 1/2...and nothing.

Does it matter what order the drivers are in?

This is the current order:
Playback devices:
1. M-Audio Delta AP 1/2
2. M-Audio Delta AP Multi
3. Wave Mapper [EV]
4. M-Audio Delta AP S/PDIF

Recording devices:
1. M-Audio Delta AP 1/2
2. M-Audio Delta AP Multi
3. Wave Mapper [EV]
4. M-Audio Delta AP S/PDIF
5. M-Audio Delta AP Mon. Mixer

I looked into the M-Aduio control panel, but I have no idea what should checked off, etc.

I guess I'll contact M-Audio and see what they say.

Thanks again for your help!
