Soundfont prob in Sonar 3 with Windows XP Pro

Hi guys,

I've just recently upgraded my OS to Windows XP Pro Service Pack 1 and software to Sonar 3 Producer Edition. I used to work with Pro Audio 9 and Windows ME. So, I'm still very new to Sonar 3 and Windows XP.

Problem is:
When I try to attach the Soundfont files to Sonar 3, I get this message saying "Not enough SounFont Memory to load SoundFont". I just need to know the steps on how to do some settings on my cache or something.... I forgot how to do it as I haven't been doing much recording in a while. Please help....as I'm trying to get back into recording again. Thanks!

This depends on how you are using the Sound Fonts. From the error, I suspect you have an SB Live or Audigy card. The setting you need is in the controls for the card; SONAR can't do anything about controlling that.

If it's a software synth, I would think the limit would be set to be some fraction of total system RAM, possibly automatically, and might or might not be user-adjustable... but again, that control would probably be withing the softsynth and not through SONAR directly...

Yeah, I'm using an SBLive! Platinum soundcard (I know it's old...). Mainly, I'm using the SoundFonts for drum programming. I suppose it was some setting that can be done on the soundcard. As I vaguely remember doing it while I was using Pro Audio 9. I guess I must have missed out some installer from the SBLive! Well, I'll need to look for the SBLive! software download for XP and see how it goes.

I've downloaded the SBLive! Platinum 5.1 driver for Windows XP and managed to get the SoundFonts working. However, all my tracks containing wave files seem to sound choppy and broken up when I listen to the playback. Things sound fine when I'm playing it live while recording but during playback, the problem occurs. Any ideas on how I can remedy this problem?


Arghh....it's really frustrating when you're in the mood to record but your system breaks down on you...Help please!

What do you mean by reprofiling the soundcard?

After installing the new SBLive XP driver, I just adjusted the SoundFont cache in Audio HQ to 50MB. I don't think this caused the problem because when I opened up those individual wave files with Windows Media Player, they sounded fine. Only when they're played in Sonar the problem occurs. So I'm guessing that Sonar may have been corrupted after I installed the XP SBLive driver. Does that make any sense?

Anyway, is there any settings that can be made in Sonar to remedy this problem? If not, I guess I may have to reisntall Sonar. Or what about upgrading XP to Service Pack 2? Would that be of any difference? So many questions....I hope somebody can help me....

In the Options -> Audio dialog you should profile your audio card (button on the bottom left of dialog). Unless you have ASIO drivers, in which case, you probably need to set the buffer size higher (say 256 or more).

Yes!!!! Thanks AlChuck and gullfo! I've finally solved the problem. Yeah, I just needed to reprofile the sound card by hitting on the Wave Profiler button. Thank you!!!!
